I do not subscribe to the notion of work-life balance.
Over the last few years, this controversial phrase has become a buzzword for people in the business world. Everyone is striving to find perfect harmony among their career, families and hobbies all while maintaining their mental health.
So often, people are told that they shouldn’t work too hard, that it is bad for their mental health, that they will ultimately have a breakdown if they let work take over their lives. But I was raised to find joy in hard work, to take pride in achievement and to strive towards my goals in both my personal and professional lives. I firmly believe that every other area of my life is happier because I love putting time and energy into my business.
I have an answer for the folks who are still advocating for the myth that is work-life balance.
Instead of work-life balance, how about work-life blend?
Work-life blend is my philosophy that recognizes that our lives are richest when instead of trying to compartmentalize the things we love, we allow them to fuse together into one beautiful existence.
I have forever been intrigued by the societal myth that you should never ask someone what they do for a living. Personally, I pour my heart and soul into my business. I would not be who I am without JAMAH and AMBITION. Asking what I do is tantamount to asking who I am. I feel so lucky to have found work that is as important to me as my family or my hobbies, and I want to celebrate that!
I am happiest when the pieces of my world connect. A great example is when Rory Gilmore carried her JAMAH bag throughout Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. It was infinitely more meaningful than a typical business triumph since her bag of choice was The Rosey, the namesake bag inspired by my best friend. What was clearly a celebratory moment for JAMAH also became a poignant point of connection in our friendship. And to further drive home the power of work-life blend: Gilmore Girls costume designer, the fabulous Brenda Maben, joined AMBITION as a mentor and we have since developed a beautiful friendship.
In June of 2023, JAMAH sponsored the third annual Robb Report California Coastal Rally.
On the road to business, this RR1 member was able to channel her inner car enthusiast! As my fiancé Michael co-captained, I couldn’t help but smile as I fully embodied the optimal work-life blend.
The message underlying work-life balance is to separate, a phenomenon that has come to dictate the way we move through the world. But if you were to think of your life as a puzzle, would you keep the pieces in the box, or would you put them together? If we live our lives in silos, how can we possibly feel whole?
