I am often asked about the meaning behind the name JAMAH.
I first discovered it in a book called Origin of Words, which I was reading because I have always been drawn to the creativity of language. The first time I read the word “jamah,” I had an instant vision of an elegant “J” perched in the corner of a handbag. I had a hunch that I had found my name, so I started researching the word’s meaning.
The more I learned, the more I realized how perfectly suited JAMAH was to my vision for the brand: A Made in the USA bespoke luxury handbag brand that integrates cause and commerce.
Ever since choosing the name, I have continued to discover the word’s multifaceted significance:
“Jamah” is a name for girls derived from the Arabic word for pearl or diamond. Perfect for a luxury brand!
Another Arabic meaning of “Jama’ah” references community or togetherness.
There is a park in the Western Cape of South Africa called Jamah Park that has been said to represent freedom.
But the most interesting meaning was actually brought to my attention by a client when he asked if I practiced Buddhism. I responded: “I do not, why do you ask?” “You have such a calm energy yet you are always laughing and excited! It makes sense that your brand is called JAMAH. Perhaps you aren’t aware, but in Buddhism there are certain sounds that represent feelings or words and the sound ‘JAMAH’ represents to be.” I replied, “Ah, my favorite expression: ‘Be who you are.’ It’s kismet!” And just like that, our motto came to be.
“Be who you are” encompasses the authenticity of being comfortable in one’s own skin, so it came as no surprise to discover that the word pajama has its origin in Hindi and refers to night clothing, or comfort clothing. Although the words “luxury” and “pajama” don’t seem to go together, this ironic pairing brings to light why I fell in love with “JAMAH.”
Taking inspiration from our motto, I have come to realize that JAMAH truly means whatever one needs it to mean.
Truth be told, if my last name were “Givenchy,” I might have gone the eponymous route! But my vision is that Nancy Gale represents a broader mission than JAMAH and AMBITION. When I think about my legacy, I want to be known for building a brand that is Made in the USA and pioneering a movement where cause and commerce are intrinsically connected.
After 23 years, it still excites me to answer the question “What is the meaning of JAMAH?” It feels serendipitous to have found a name that so perfectly suits the JAMAH narrative.
